Yeah, the error said it couldn't mount.. then said halting. After I pressed return a #mepis prompt appeared.
I tried to manually mount it by typing: mount //dev/something00 //linux Then a whole load of file format errors occured (I mean EXT-2 errors, EXT-3, FAT errors, NTFS errors... e.t.c)
I'll try Debian, but I don't like wasting these many disks trying to find a suitable LINUX distro !!! (In total I have used up at least 15 odd disks..)

Um... Are you sure it said something00? It is more likely to be /dev/hdc. And it wouldn't mount anything at /linux. There is no such thing as /linux (usually...). Also, I wouldn't get Debian if I was as newbie-ish as you. Get Kubuntu.

It was something like //dev/something00... I'll attempt to boot into MEPIS to attain the correct error message.
EDIT:
This is what appears on screen

I dunno then. As I said, MEPIS is the buggiest distro I've ever seen. Did you put it on a CD-RW? Try installing the ISO in a virtual machine and see if it works there. Find one that you like and is easy to install, then burn a disk.

I've just loaded it in VMware Player and it gives the exact same message...
So I guess it's just a dodgy download.
EDIT : I'm downloading Kubuntu now...

How do you know how to boot an ISO in VMWare? You have exceeded my expectations.

Well the way I did it was to edit configuration files to point to my ISO, tell it it was booting from a "cdrom-image" and to enable the CD drive.
Kubuntu works !! Only problem is my wireless doesn't work because when I click enable in the network control panel on my wireless, it appears enabled for half a second then it switches to disabled again. A bit of Googling revealed that the latest distro of Kubuntu (6.0.6 I think) does not support many wireless cards. I would have used a wired connection but I wasn't allowed to plug the bright yellow cable into the router.
And I also worked out why MEPIS didn't work. My stupid file downloader did not piece together the 4 parts of the download, leaving me with only a quarter of MEPIS on the CD. I'm going to download it AGAIN using good old IE and hopefully it'll work.
EDIT: I would have posted earlier last night but we had a 3 hour long power cut.

I know hot to boot an ISO in VMWare (I do it like you do). I just didn't think you knew how. I can't vouch for Kubuntus wireless capabilities, because we only used it wired on my Dads computer. MEPIS supports (almost?) every wireless card possible, but it's as buggy as hell. If you haven't downloaded it yet, try to get version 3.4-3, it's a lot more stable. Having installed it, open a terminal and type:
su <type root password> apt-get update apt-get upgrade apt-get dist-upgrade #I'm not sure if this will do anything, but it's worth a try exit
That will get the latest software on the more stable distro. If Kubuntu is already on the computer, leave it and I'll figure out how to get wireless support for you. If it is in VMWare then you won't get wireless.

It was just a LiveCD, not too important...
Would it be possible to install it or MEPIS on my portable Hard Drive (making a new partition and most importantly preserving all data on the 2 existing FAT32 partitions.)

I can boot from my portable hard disk (when I attempt to boot into the Windows 98 OS on there it starts to boot, then says invalid system disk - only because I deleted a crucial file by mistake).
I was just wondering if I could install to it without destroying all the data/partitions already on it.

It is possible to resize a partition. You need to make sure the new size is larger than the amount currently in use. I recommend QParted.

Er.. how can the new size be bigger if there is no room left ??
Right. Here's what I want to do :
At the moment : Partition 1 Partition 2 Data Partition Old Backup FAT FAT 2.5 GB 1 GB
What I want : Partition 1 Partition 2 Partition 3 Data Partition Old Backup MEPIS LINUX FAT FAT EXT-2/FAT 1.5 GB 1 GB 1 GB

By 'currently in use', I mean the file size taken up at the moment. If you have a 3GB partition with 2GB of files on it, then shrinking it to 1GB will result in data loss. Also, you don't want ext2 or FAT. You want ext3 or ReiserFS or another modern file system. ext2 and FAT get corrupted very easily, in comparison.

ok, ok... My 2.5GB partition has only 1.5GB data on it.

I have just uploaded ST AA3! It follows the naming conventions of the other releases. I think I will write an official release page later today (I probably won't have time tomorrow, family are coming over for Christmas).

When weapons are done. You might not be able to fire them, but there will be weapons, weapon choosing, and weapon aiming. I might do a little more as well (loadable maps and skins).
