I'm looking into getting a wireless network. My house has very thick walls and the computers are on different floors at opposite ends of the house. If you have a wireless network what brand do you use? I am looking at Netgear and Linksys. Which do you think's better? Any advise would be appreciated.

I don't know about brands (my router was given to us from BT), but I'd go with one that allows you to connect extra aerials to boost signal strength and availability/ or is MIMO capable.
I'd probably go with a Linksys, for example the WRT54GX is supposed to be a good performer. In the end, it all depends on cost..,.

Thanks, I was also looking at the 'MaxRange' MIMO router and card from netgear.
Thanks for the link.
(sorry for not logging in - I couldn't be bothered)

Also, don't buy Pre-N stuff until 802.11N has been finalised...

OK.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that. It's because all the companies releasing Draft-N stuff conform to what they think the 802.11n standard is going to be. So they're all slightly different (vendor lock-in), and they won't match the final standard.

Thanks for the help but, sorry Max, I forget to mention. I need an ADSL modem router - that one's a cable router.
Linksys don't seem to have as many ADSL routers as Netgear which makes me feel Netgear might be better but il keep looking.
Linksys have ONE (one router with or without speedboost) Netgear have THREE (normal, super G, Max Range)
(and then they both have a N router)

Why didn't you save it as a csv? I refuse to download it. If it has any scripting capabilities, or embedded image capabilities, and it's not an open format, then I'm not downloading it! Also, an ADSL router is no different to a cable router. You plug the ethernet cable from your broadband modem into the internet socket on the router.

Only problem is that my ADSL modem has a USB output. I need an ADSL router as it has a built in modem.

Your modem has USB output? Where is the USB standard for networking?

Windows only. My router has USB as well as ethernet and wireless.

If a company is selling a product that is not software dependant, then it should conform to a standard.

Well a USB driver is needed for it...

What? Requiring a driver doesn't mean it conforms to a standard, does it?

Exactly.

Oh, I see. I... think.
EDIT: Back on topic, Definitely do NOT get Belkin. The percentage of Belkin hardware that I own that I am dissatisfied with is now 75%. I have three wireless cards and a KVM switch from them. Wireless Card 1 - OK Wireless Card 2 - Requires me to compile drivers into my kernel Wireless Card 3 - Stops the whole computer from working (Card goes in, power goes on, fan starts, that's it. Power goes off, card comes out, power goes on, computer boots normally) KVM switch - If the computer it is on does not support USB at the moment (e.g. BIOS, DOS, anything without USB drivers), it switches over to the other computer. It thinks if I can't use my keyboard or mouse, why let me use the monitor? It doesn't stop to think that I might be using a different keyboard or mouse. Anyway, rant over.

Thanks for everyone's help. I think that I have found a router and card that i'm going to get. (The link is now inactive as I wanted the space on my server)

My KVM Switch has hit a new low. It has started switching over even when the one it's on is using the USB stuff. I hate Belkin.
You're not getting a Belkin are you? Don't. I now have to compile a custom kernel and use the RaLink card. At least there are actually Linux drivers for it, instead of using a wrapper on the Windows drivers...
