Hi, not used the forum for a while - since giving up with the network . But now i have a new query. Will my laptop recognise portable hard drives and/or pendrives? It works with floppys...

If you connect a USB data device to your Linux laptop it should recognize. It works with me whenever I plug my USB Hard Drive on Mepis.

Just plug it in and see what happens. When I plug my hard drive in, it automatically mounts it so I can use it straight away.

I did something to Mepis when I used it that stopped it automounting...
Anyway, if it doesn't automount, open up the file manager and type 'media:/' in the address bar. Right click on the device and click Mount. I didn't realise you could do this when I used Mepis and I mounted my pen drive with 'mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/sda1'
EDIT:
Can you get internet or is it just SMB (Windows file shares) that doesn't work?

You were still logged in from last time.
I can't think why you can't get SMB.

No. That does not mention (desktop) Linux. That says embedded Linux. They differ in that one runs on a computer and one runs on a device.
