I know that, on the internet, there are a lot of people who would like to use Linux but don't for one reason or another. This is a place to post information about distributions that would be good for somebody who is new to Linux. When posting, please write the name, then a hyperlink, and then a description. I will try to keep this top post updated. Ubuntu - www.ubuntu.com - Based on Debian. I have heard that this is good for beginners. I, however, do not like it. Kubuntu - www.kubuntu.org - Based on Ubuntu. Practically the same as Ubuntu, but uses KDE. SimplyMEPIS - www.mepis.org - Based on Debian. This is really good for newbies, the hardware support is excellent and it comes with a lot of pre-installed software. DSL - www.damnsmalllinux.org - Based on Debian. This is a very light distribution that can run from a 50MB CD. I know from personal experience that it can run at a reasonable speed in 32MB RAM with a P150. Help for newbies is available via Dillo from the desktop.

I have done a full install of Gentoo, so I win! I don't use Gentoo because it takes forever to compile everything, but I win! Nyee ha.

Right, my first sensible post. I have a fairly old laptop with a version of exp on it, but exp needs to be activated and we have no more activations left (max of 3). So i thought this would b a great opertunity to install mepis. However, it just keeps runnin windows and not bootin from the cd. As its runnin up there is an option to select boot device but it dusnt seem to do anything. Any ideas?
Oh and also if i do get to the logon screen, i cant remember what the user name + pword to use is

Umm... You MIGHT need to update your BIOS (I did to make my laptop boot the CD). What make and model is the laptop? What the fuck is exp? The username can be selected on the right (I'd go with root for installing. NEVER use root while using the computer. It is a security vulnerability. Use su or sudo in a terminal if you absolutely need root priveleges). The password is the same as the username (depending on which username you choose). Take the laptop to school and I'll help you.

shouldn't it be XP instead of exp? the BIOS is the thing that boots an operating system (well, it actually loads a boot loader, but that doesn't concern you). If it can't boot from a CD, it needs updating. What make and model is it? Try googling for 'boot from cd on <make> <model>'

Refresh my memory about what is in the WiFi and wlan tabs. I _think_ that you need to set up your wireless info in WiFi, then go to wlan and click restart or stop, then start or something. Then go into the main tab and restart wlan.

Ha ha! You almost certainly already have drivers. You can't run Windows software. Also, how did you get into the CD? Did you go to /mnt/cdrom? Did you mount it? Or did it automount and you clicked on a little button?
To see if you already have drivers, open a terminal (K menu, System, Konsole) and type:
ndiswrapper -l
All lowercase. If it says command not found or not enough priveleges, then type:
sudo ndiswrapper -l
You _might_ need to enter your password or root's password. If there is an NDIs driver, then one of them will say 'driver installed, hardware present'. If none of them say that, then find out the make and model of your card. Then google for 'chipset of <make> <model>'. Find out what chipset it has. Tell me.
EDIT: But first try entering your wireless details in the OS Centre.

How do you mean? To view shared documents, open Konqueror (NOT FIREFOX!!!) and type smb:/ in the address bar. Sharing documents is a little harder, and I'll show you that when you come to it.
